In this post, we’ll take a look at three air conditioning mistakes you could be making this summer. If you need service, then please don’t hesitate to contact us right away!
1. Your Thermostat Is Set Too Low
Most people like their homes to be cool and comfortable during the summer, and so they set the thermostat at what they think to be a reasonable temperature. You may set yours in the mid-70s, but if you put it any lower than that, you could be making your air conditioner work overtime. When that first heat wave sweeps through the Chicagoland area, it’s tempting to turn the thermostat down to 71 or 72 degrees, but that means it will take longer for your AC to achieve the desired temperature. Leaving the temperature set at 75 or above will keep the house comfortable, and you can save a few bucks on your monthly energy bill.
2. You’re Blocking Your Vents and Returns
Your home’s ductwork is essential to carrying cool air throughout the house and bringing the return air back to the system. However, if you have furniture or other obstacles blocking your vents and returns, then you could be severely hindering your cooling system’s efficiency. The air has to find its way around whatever is in front of the vent, and something that’s blocking the opening completely could be stopping the air from flowing at all. There may not be a seal around the vent or register, but it’s still taking longer for that room or that part of the house to cool down to your desired temperature. Moving things away from your vents and allowing air to move freely can seriously decrease how long it takes for your house to reach the right temperature.
3. You’re Skipping Regular Maintenance
Your air conditioning system is a machine that relies on many different parts to run properly. When one of the parts breaks or comes loose, it’s important to call in a certified HVAC provider as soon as possible. It’s never a good idea to ignore a noise that’s coming from your AC, or skip regular maintenance when it comes to changing filters or replacing old parts. Having your air conditioner serviced annually can help it last longer, and you won’t have to worry about replacing it with a newer model in the next few years.
At Absolute Comfort, we know that you want to keep your house as cool as possible during the summer. However, it’s important to be smart about how you handle your cooling system, and to set things up so that the system can run smoothly all season long. If you have HVAC questions, then please don’t hesitate to call.
